Narrowing 80 rural healthcare facilities to a 20-facility shortlist

I turned a rural hospital expansion question into data, selection criteria and recommendations.

  1. ~80facilities audited
  2. Weighted scorecardweights set with the client
  3. 20on the shortlist

The question

Startup founders were planning a rural hospital network and needed criteria for choosing facilities.

My role

I led a 6-member graduate consulting team and did most of the data work myself.

Data

About 80 rural facilities in Kansas, from Definitive Healthcare. I audited the dataset and isolated anomalies to separate structural risks from one-time events.

Method

A weighted scorecard in Excel. The founders and I set the weights together, based on their priorities. Financial, operational and demographic indicators fed the score.

Output

A 20-facility shortlist, Power BI benchmarking dashboards and a reusable scoring model, presented to the founders as pre-launch research.
